Protein Ice Cream: The New Healthy Culinary Trend for Summer
Discover the rising protein-packed ice cream trend that is reshaping consumer habits, perfectly balancing dessert indulgence with healthy nutrition.

Research from Innova Market Insights indicates that 42% of consumers consider protein the most crucial component in their diet. In response, summer desserts are being reformulated to offer higher nutritional value without compromising the taste experience.

Since early 2026, numerous food brands have introduced protein-fortified ice cream lines targeting health-conscious consumers. Brands such as Rivo, Nymbl, Blue Bell, and Canada's Foothills Creamery have launched products containing 11 to 15 grams of protein per serving. Notably, David Protein has gained attention with its 10-gram protein pint that contains only 210 calories, achieved through the use of EPG fat substitutes and calorie-free sweeteners.

The U.S. protein market was valued at $114.4 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow by 1.9% annually through 2028. According to Rania Nasis, founder of Nymbl, this is not a passing fad but a shift driven by sustainable demographic needs, with protein-fortified categories expected to continue expanding within the frozen food sector.

To maintain quality, manufacturers must overcome textural challenges. Nymbl utilizes a blend of milk protein concentrate and whey protein isolate, while Rivo incorporates chicory root fiber to enhance the eating experience. Kevin Bates, founder of Rivo, stresses that the primary goal is to create a delicious product before highlighting nutritional statistics.
This perspective is echoed by Peter Rahal, CEO of David Protein. He believes true success is achieved when customers enjoy the product as a traditional dessert, with the nutritional profile serving as a surprising additional benefit. With impressive growth, David Protein is on track to exceed $300 million in revenue in 2026.
The protein ice cream wave underscores a shift in modern consumer habits, where people no longer want to trade off between flavor and wellness. The intersection of indulgent desserts and functional foods is blurring traditional lines, transforming these products into a staple of a sustainable healthy lifestyle.
