Con Tien Yam: Organic farming model brings high economic efficiency
Farmers in Con Tien commune, Quang Tri are excited as the organic yam farming model yields high productivity with market prices doubling compared to last season.

In Con Tien commune, Quang Tri province, farmers are entering the harvest season for winged yam with great excitement. Produce is being purchased by traders directly at the farm at prices ranging from 10,000 to 12,000 VND/kg, nearly double the 6,000 - 7,000 VND/kg seen in 2024. Con Tien yams are currently being distributed to major retailers nationwide.

Ms. Ho Thi Hanh, a local farmer, shared that yams are a traditional crop in the area. A highlight of local cultivation is the use of home-composted manure and the strict minimization of chemical pesticides. Thanks to the favorable soil and climate, the yams achieve a distinct, delicious flavor, making them highly sought after in the market.

This year, organic yam yields reached 17 - 18 tons per hectare. At current market prices, farmers can generate revenue exceeding 190 million VND/ha, with net profits surpassing 100 million VND/ha after production costs. To ensure quality, farmers strictly follow crop rotation cycles to reduce soil-borne pests and diseases.

Mr. Le Phuoc Hieu, Deputy Head of the Economic Division of Con Tien commune, reported that the commune currently has 62 hectares of organic yam cultivation. Looking forward, the locality plans to designate 150 hectares of hilly land as a centralized commercial production zone. The primary goal is to build a sustainable Con Tien yam brand, securing stable market access to increase agricultural value and household incomes.
