New Research: High-Dose Vitamin D Supplementation May Improve Cognitive Function in the Elderly
A study from Emory University suggests that high-dose vitamin D supplementation may help improve cognitive function and reduce dementia risk in older adults.

Dementia and Alzheimer's disease are becoming significant global health challenges. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 57 million people worldwide live with dementia, a figure expected to rise rapidly due to global population aging. Against this backdrop, a new study by scientists at Emory University (USA) offers positive prospects for enhancing cognitive health through a common micronutrient.

The study, published in the journal Sleep Medicine, surveyed 54 older adults experiencing sleep disturbances and mild cognitive impairment—two early warning signs of dementia. Volunteers' cognitive and memory capabilities were assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment over a 10-minute period.
Data analysis revealed that participants who supplemented with 5,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D daily scored 13% higher on cognitive tests compared to the non-supplemented group, even after adjusting for factors such as age, education, and body mass index (BMI). Notably, this effectiveness was independent of whether D2 or D3 was used, and lower doses did not yield the same significant improvement.
Associate Professor Victoria Pak, co-author of the study at the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University, states that the phase of mild cognitive impairment coupled with sleep disorders is the 'golden window' for intervention. Utilizing accessible interventions like vitamin D supplementation could become increasingly vital as Alzheimer's incidence rates continue to climb.
The mechanism is believed to involve vitamin D receptors present in various brain regions, which play a direct role in protecting neurons and controlling age-related inflammatory responses. Furthermore, the micronutrient helps regulate sleep-wake cycles. However, medical experts such as Sandra Zhang from the Frances Stern Nutrition Center at Tufts Medical Center and nutritionist Jessica Cording advise caution, noting that 5,000 IU is significantly higher than the standard daily recommendation of 600-800 IU. Individuals should not self-administer high doses without blood tests and professional medical guidance.
