Zinc serves as a co-factor for over 100 enzymes, supporting cell division and protein synthesis. Regarding taste, zinc helps maintain the sensitivity of gustatory and olfactory cells. When deficient, digestive enzymes function less efficiently, causing children to lose their appetite. This creates a pathological cycle: eating less leads to nutritional deficiency, which in turn exacerbates the loss of appetite.

Furthermore, zinc directly regulates growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), the key agents determining bone elongation. Zinc deficiency disrupts cell division at the growth plate, leading to a growth rate slower than standard milestones. Additionally, zinc supports the differentiation of B and T lymphocytes, shielding children from respiratory and gastrointestinal infections.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Lam, former Deputy Director of the National Institute of Nutrition, parents should monitor signs such as frequent illnesses, sleep disorders, hair loss, or skin lesions. To prevent this, daily diets should prioritize natural zinc sources such as seafood (oysters, shrimp, crab), red meat, egg yolks, and whole grains. Combining these with vitamin C-rich foods also optimizes zinc absorption. If children show clear symptoms of malnutrition, parents should consult a doctor for clinical testing and appropriate supplementation dosage.
