How many eggs should children eat per day? Expert guidance

Eggs are a nutrient-dense food, playing a vital role in providing high-quality protein and essential minerals for a child's growth. However, balancing the quantity of eggs in the daily menu according to age is a key factor that parents need to consider.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), one large egg provides many important micronutrients such as Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, and Choline – components that support efficient energy metabolism. Additionally, egg yolks contain lecithin, a type of fat that forms cell membranes and supports brain health. Eggs are also an abundant source of B-group vitamins (B1, B6), Vitamins A, D, K, and trace minerals including zinc, copper, manganese, and iodine.

Dr. Truong Hong Son, Director of the Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine, emphasizes the importance of adjusting egg portions according to the digestive capacity of each age group:

- Children 6 - 7 months old: Should consume 1/2 of an egg yolk per meal, at a frequency of 2 - 3 times/week.

- Children 8 - 12 months old: Can have 1 egg yolk per meal, about 3 - 4 meals/week.

- Children 1 - 2 years old: Can eat 3 - 4 eggs per week and start incorporating egg whites.

- Children 2 years and older: Parents can allow the child to eat 1 egg per day if the child enjoys it.

Safe egg preparation requires strictly cooking the eggs thoroughly to prevent risks of intestinal bacterial infections. Absolutely do not feed children raw eggs or add raw eggs into hot porridge. Furthermore, combining eggs with finely chopped vegetables or cheese not only increases the nutritional value but also adds fiber and calcium to the child's diet.
