The Role of Chelate Zinc in Nutritional Strategies for Post-Infection Recovery in Children

At the scientific seminar 'Guidelines for Rational Nutritional Supplementation for Infection Patients' organized by the Vietnam Nutrition Association, Dr. Phan Bich Nga, Chair of the Pediatric Nutrition Chapter, emphasized the crucial role of zinc in the immune system. The expert provided an in-depth analysis of various zinc supplements, highlighting chelate zinc (Zinc Bisglycinate) for its optimal absorption capacity.

Amid seasonal changes and environmental pollution, the circulation of pathogens such as Adenovirus, seasonal flu, RSV, and measles has increased pressure on children's health. Many patients face prolonged fatigue, loss of appetite, and weight loss after the acute phase. Experts note that infections increase the body's energy requirements by approximately 13%, leading to the mobilization of protein from muscles and fat tissues, which necessitates a specialized nutritional recovery strategy.

Dr. Phan Bich Nga affirmed that zinc is a central micronutrient for the immune system, essential for lymphocyte maturation and inflammation regulation. Zinc supplementation helps inhibit the enzyme NADPH Oxidase (NOX), reduces free radicals, and activates endogenous antioxidant systems such as SOD and Metallothionein. The distinction lies in the type of zinc used: Zinc Bisglycinate (organic chelate zinc) has a bioavailability 43.3% higher than Zinc Gluconate due to its absorption mechanism via the PepT1 peptide channel, which reduces competition with iron and calcium.

Beyond its superior bioavailability, chelate zinc lacks a metallic aftertaste and causes less gastrointestinal irritation, making it an excellent choice for children. Additionally, to support recovery, diets should provide protein at 1–1.3g/kg of body weight/day, sufficient carbohydrates, and lipids accounting for 15–20% of total energy intake. Combining rational nutrition with the correct form of micronutrients is the key to helping children regain their resistance and reduce the risk of reinfection.
