Phu Quoc strengthens environmental and food safety controls ahead of APEC 2027
Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone launches a collaborative model to protect the environment and food safety, preparing infrastructure and legal frameworks for the APEC 2027 summit.
On the morning of August 10, 2026, the People's Committee of Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone, in collaboration with the An Giang Provincial Police, launched the initiative 'Joining Hands to Protect Resources, the Environment, and Food Safety on Phu Quoc Island'.
At the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Le Quoc Toan, Vice Chairman of the Phu Quoc People's Committee, emphasized the significance of this model as the island prepares infrastructure and service quality management for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC 2027) forum. Rapid economic growth poses significant challenges to resource management and food safety standards.
Despite proactive government communication and inspections, environmental and food safety violations remain complex. Mr. Toan asserted: 'The authorities have requested the An Giang Provincial Police and relevant units to review and mandate that individuals and business households sign commitments to abide by the law. All violations will be strictly penalized.'
According to the Special Economic Zone's data, in the first six months of 2026, the rate of the population with access to clean water reached over 87%, while solid waste collection reached 96%. Authorities inspected 28 business establishments, fined 4 violators a total of 35.5 million VND, and secured commitments from 64 businesses to strictly adhere to food safety regulations.
In addition to administrative measures, the transfer of the An Thới port management to a new operator is expected to provide momentum for sustainable tourism development, aligning with Phu Quoc's strategic goals for the coming period.
